Plaid Shorts
Three and a half years ago someone had the brilliant idea to produce in mass production a single pair of Plaid Shorts. I can bet that no one would have thought that just a small idea would become a national epidemic. Now it seems as though one cannot live without one pair of plaid shorts. But let’s face it the more you make the uglier they become. Its almost like the croc epidemic , the more colors they made and the more knock offs invented the more you started to hate them . And if you are still into the croc’s maybe you should reconsider your style choices. But manufacturing companies have made a killing off these plaid shorts and cut profits from those who always had a small variety of plaids in their collections . And trust me I am not telling you not to buy them because I do sell a few in my store, I am just saying don’t make an investment in them.
I can name about 17 different reasons why we shouldn’t make an investment in popular trends like the plaid short. But that may take forever so I can list about 3 great reasons not to make the investment.
First , you don’t have a lot of choices in what you can put with the short. It is true that the eye may deceive but we can see when the wrong color is matched up with that pair of shorts. Just because you saw a small line of purple in that short doesn’t mean that you can wear a totally purple shirt with loud peach and green shorts. It doesn’t work. Instead choose the short that you can have a variety of matches with. Less is always more, the fewer the colors are the more opportunity you will have in completing your outfit.
Secondly, use wisdom in purchasing any type of plaid. In this case age does matter! If you are over the age of 22. Yes 22 years old , you have absolutely no reason to purchase plaid shorts (or even plaid for that matter)! In some cases I’ll give a free pass to wear a pair of Ralph Lauren’s plaid collection ( which may have the purple label). But if its not Ralph and you are not dressing up in a costume, and you are not a farmer, just walk on past the PLAID! Its not for you. Also in that wisdom , you should be aware that shorts on men after a certain age can look childish. I think that shorts in basic colors are meant for around the house or for special events. Women if you decide to wears shorts ( and I do) try to invest in solid colors and never make an investment in plaid for you!
And last , Parents this one is for you . Length and size does matter. If you child ( son or daughter) is 4’7” and in the 6th grade don’t go out and purchase them a size 18 pair of shorts. Chances are the will sweep the group and look more like Capri’s or floods if you don’t watch it. If they can’t wear shorts to school , don’t buy them for school . Buy a pair that fits well and has leg room. I have two sons and they are different in age and size. My 5 year old is now wearing a proper size 7 in boys. Instead of buying him a size 8 ( who needs growing room when clothes are so cheap anyway) I buy the 7 or 6 depending on who made the short so that it will go to his knee and he will appear neater. Now my 9 year old is a lot taller but very skinny , the size 12 that he’d probably wear in pants will dwindle to a size 8 so that it too will look like a short and not a coo lock.
Its not always a good idea to follow trends because if you don’t watch it you will have a closet full of thing that are out of date and not in season. Instead make investments in good things that can last you through the next season.
